Rabbit’s diseases: Prevention and treatment - Ear Mites

Ear Mites

Ear mites are parasitic disease caused by psoroptes cuniculi which likes to live in the rabbit's ear canal.

Symptoms
An infected rabbit shakes its head and flops or scratches its ears trying to rid itself of mites. Thick crusts of mites and serum will accumulate inside the ear. In severe cases symptoms include spasms of eye muscles, nerve damage resulting in partial paralysis, weight loss, and secondary infections of the ears.

Treatment
Swab the ear with a mixture of 1 part iodoform, 10 parts ether, and 25 parts vegetable oil or 25-30% emulsion of benzyl benzoate in vegetable oil. Gently massage the base of the ear to work the oil in and drown the mites. Remember to remove all crust before swabbing the ear. Continue the treatment 6 to 10 days after first treatment.

Prevention
Treat all rabbits near the infected one.
